What is Spiritual Formation?

If Theology is what we believe to be true about God, Christian Spirituality is our lived experience of those truths as we explore what it looks like to live in relationship with God.

And so, Spiritual Formation is the process of diving into our lived experience of God & our relationship with Him & all the joys, struggles, & questions that come with it. As we grow deeper in relationship with God, we begin the process of allowing God to shape & form our hearts into the heart of Christ. In doing so, we become “contemplatives in action” so that we might become like Christ in love & service for the sake of others, to the glory of God.

Spiritual Formation is about growing deeper in knowledge of self & knowledge of God as we become more aware of how we are each uniquely made in God’s image.

The ministry of spiritual formation offers spiritual practices, both individually & communally, that help us to participate in & connect with God’s transforming work of love within us; practices that shape & support a way of life lived by faith. These practices invite us to be intentional about making space in our lives to notice & respond to God’s active & loving presence. Our choice of spiritual practices during the different seasons of our lives, becomes the rhythm that supports our relationship with God & our experiences toward wholeness & growth in the character & life of Jesus Christ.

Some Guiding Principles of Christian Spiritual Formation

  • It is intentional in the practice of the classical spiritual disciplines that help us to cooperate & connect with God’s transforming work of love within us.

  • It requires & enlightens both knowledge of self & knowledge of God.

  • It is communal reflecting the Trinity as we journey together into a deeper relationship with God & one another.

  • It is immersed in the life, teaching, & ministry of Jesus Christ.

  • It is grounded in the cross & resurrection, bringing our sin & brokenness into the light of God’s transforming love & healing.

  • It comes from grace & it is by grace that we are being transformed into Christlikeness through the power of the Holy Spirit.

  • It invites us to embody our faith.
