A Light Has Dawned

FROM THE DESK OF IELA GALIANO-WILLIAMS

Painting By Spiritual Director & PAX Graduate, Shauna Kurihara

“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.” - Isaiah 9:2

January 6th marked the official conclusion of the 12 Days of Christmas and the beginning of the church season of Epiphany. This painting was prayerfully created by spiritual director and artist Shauna Kurihara for this year's PAX alumni Christmas ornament.

The first day of Epiphany traditionally celebrates the arrival of the three Kings, who followed a brilliant light to worship Jesus, the newborn King of the Jews. This feels like the perfect time to share this meaningful artwork with you.

Jesus is often described as the Light of the World. There are many worship songs that touch on this theme, so like me you might find yourself humming the familiar lyrics, “Light of the world, you stepped down into darkness, opened my eyes, helped me see,” or something similar!

As you gaze upon this beautiful depiction of light shining in the darkness, I invite you to reflect on two questions:

Where are you longing to see God's light break through the darkness as we begin this new year?

Where might God's light already be shining, but you need God's help to open your eyes to truly see it?

Epiphany continues until Lent begins on February 18th, so you have plenty of time. If these questions resonate, carry them and this image with you throughout the coming month, and watch for where God's light becomes visible.
