MENTORSHIP
Feel supported & equipped as a spiritual director by those who have gone before you.
You Are A Spiritual Director…
So you’ve graduated from TL2, congratulations! Maybe it has been years, maybe it was just recently, but we know that, at times, wherever you are on the journey, it can be hard to navigate this ministry on your own. The imposter syndrome can be so real as you try to build a practice, offer it to your church, or even just see a few folks. The good news? You don’t have to do it alone.
What if our job description as spiritual directors is to listen to Jesus & then to simply be ourselves?
The Ins & Outs of Mentorship
-
Mentors are seasoned spiritual directors coming alongside you in your practice of spiritual direction to offer encouragement, wisdom, & support.
-
A mentor offers guidance & answers around any clinical questions surrounding spiritual direction such as:
How to move forward with a directee when you feel stuck or your current approach doesn't feel like it is landing.
Help with the "business" questions surrounding SD.
Being a place to bounce off the “dos and don’ts” of SD
-
Supervision is about your own interior life & response to what comes up for you in a session with a directee. Mentorship is about your practice & ministry as a whole.
-
Your personal spiritual director is for anything going on surrounding your relationship with God. It does not need to be related to your journey as a spiritual director (although it may be!). A mentor may ask thoughtful questions, but they are primarily there to provide advice, insights, guidance, etc....
-
Yes it does! We don’t want it to break your bank, but we do want to value the expertise & time of our mentors. For this first year, we have priced it at $50/hr. Consider it similar to hiring a personalized ministry coach at an amazing rate.
Meet the Mentors
These spiritual directors feel a call as part of their ministry to build up & encourage fellow spiritual directors. Bobbie Beggs-Sargent
-
I am a seasoned spiritual director with many years of varied experience in church ministry, both as a lay leader in a couple of large churches in metro-Boston & as a ministry partner to my husband as he pastored a small Vermont church. I can personally relate to the questions & insecurities that can arise when starting to offer spiritual direction & trying to grow our own practice & would love to help someone(s) else along the way. I find it to be a very fulfilling parttime job & have branched out in several ways alongside giving direction, such as by offering retreats, leading an annual pilgrimage, & taking people through the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises, as well as working with PAX. I offer online & in-person spiritual direction & could imagine mentoring in either format.

Jennifer Drummond

Jennifer Drummond, a poet & spiritual director on the North Shore of Boston, loves to make space for people to encounter God. Having graduated in 2014 from Holy Conversations (an Anglican program led by Canon Susan Skillen), she has been assisting in that course since 2020. She has also participated in multiple PAX programs over the last decade, including the certificate in spiritual formation! Through her writing, leading retreats, small groups or one on one, she has continued to practice listening to God with others. She sees regularly how beneficial it is for those who listen to have support in their own practices, & considers it a gift to offer this kind of support to those who may be just starting out.
She currently meets people in Hamilton MA, on the phone/Facetime, or via Zoom.

Shirley Paz

Since graduating from the Selah spiritual director training program in 2011, I have found that the discipline of spiritual direction is, quite simply, foundational for anyone seeking to journey with God. Although I have been a pastor at West Church since 2007, it is as a spiritual director that I feel most at home. That’s not to say I always understand what the Spirit is doing in a person’s life- far from it!- but that somehow in the blending of trust & mystery, the redemptive loving experience of God is always present, & always invitational. It is a setting of intimacy.
I have served on the Board of Pax for many years, & helped design & develop the spiritual formation ministry in our church community. Working alongside others & being part of how the Spirit shapes their deepening relationship with Jesus is both humbling & joyous for me. We are indeed fellow journeyers in the transformative love of the Father.
My personal story includes experiences of significant loss, & God has used that in my life to meet others in places of brokenness. I find that it is a great help to bring that perspective into mentorship, as we all face sorrows & loss, & therein come to know the God who is enough.
Shirley is available to meet in person on the North Shore of MA
