<image:title>Passing the Peace - Who Are We?</image:title>
<image:caption>PAX is a Christian spiritual formation center & non-profit that began in a small town by the marsh in Massachusetts. Now, we train people from all over the country in the art of contemplative listening. Our vision is to equip you to integrate spiritual formation into your life & the life of your worshipping communities. We believe in moving from a head to a heart knowledge of the voice & love of God. Through our cohort programs, spiritual direction, & retreats, we seek to create room & equip people to hold spaces where we can hear & recognize the voice of God & know that we are beloved. This blog is an extension of our ministry & a place to get to know each other as well as provide a space to share things we learn along the way. Below, you will find posts written by our PAX staff team as well as wonderful guest writers. We are looking forward to listening together.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - A Light Has Dawned - Painting By Spiritual Director & PAX Graduate, Shauna Kurihara</image:title>
<image:caption>“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.” - Isaiah 9:2 January 6th marked the official conclusion of the 12 Days of Christmas and the beginning of the church season of Epiphany. This painting was prayerfully created by spiritual director and artist Shauna Kurihara for this year's PAX alumni Christmas ornament. The first day of Epiphany traditionally celebrates the arrival of the three Kings, who followed a brilliant light to worship Jesus, the newborn King of the Jews. This feels like the perfect time to share this meaningful artwork with you.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - My Word for 2026: Savor</image:title>
<image:caption>This is my third year selecting a word for the new year, and it’s a tradition I have come to love. It offers me a moment to pause, listen with God, and also hear back from all of you! The word that keeps coming to mind for 2026 is "savor." As always, I will have many conversations with God to understand why this word is emerging. Yet, as I’ve slowed down over the holidays, I’ve felt a deep desire—and really a need—to fully savor each precious moment in this season of life. To be honest, this isn’t easy right now. My husband and I work from home while chasing after our toddler. Any free moment during the week is usually filled with work, caring for Norie, or active rest.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Advent Week 4: The Shepherds - God Revealed to the Unexpected</image:title>
<image:caption>For many Christmas seasons, usually while still eating leftovers from Thanksgiving, the Charlie Brown Christmas special would draw us all in the living room to smush together on the couch. With the iconic Charlie Brown theme song playing, all eyes were glued on the TV. A part of me identifies with Charlie Brown; the one whose path wasn’t as smooth or traditional as others. Charlie struggles to fit in, even with his friend group. He’s been labeled with expectations to fail and has a low view of himself. Even his dog Snoopy seemed smarter and more successful than Charlie!</image:caption>

<image:caption>When the Thanksgiving day parade is over and the turkey is eaten, my family excitedly turns on the Christmas music, buys the tree, and hangs the lights! With the help of my children, we head to the basement and bring up the boxes of our favorite Christmas stories. We dust off our copy of The Christmas Carol, read through How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and turn the pages of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. We laugh at the memories these stories have given us and long to read through them all again.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Advent Week 2: The Innkeeper - The Inn I Long For, and the One God Enters When God Comes ’Round the Back</image:title>
<image:caption>A hidden aspiration of mine, which I’ve truly romanticized, is the idea of owning an inn. Every “spiritual gift” assessment I’ve taken over the past three decades (which is roughly one billion, particularly in the ’80s) has shouted: hospitality. I just know I would excel at making rooms feel cozy and inviting, baking oodles of scones, and talking timelessly with guests over an afternoon cup of tea. And yet—hospitality (philoxenia—love of the stranger) is never only about offering comfort; it’s about making room where there might seem to be none.</image:caption>

<image:caption>It is safe to say that we all have come face to face with disappointment- whether it is having a dream die or a hope disappear. Oftentimes that which we hope for can be good! And when these hopes do not come to fruition we learn something significant, that hope requires you to open your heart to potential pain. I have felt this ache before, having to part ways with a longing or to release expectations for others, myself, and even God. Having felt this pain, I also know the reflex of protecting myself, growing sceptical and engaging life in such a way to minimize opportunities to experience those disappointments again.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Walking With Saints</image:title>
<image:caption>For the last couple of miles of our walk along Hadrian’s Wall in England I had been engrossed in conversation about what we were noticing on the pilgrimage we were engaged in (as well as admiring the views.) Several of us shared what we had enjoyed or been surprised by in the last 5 or so days. Towards the end, we specifically centered in on a lament each of us had written in an old crypt (from 1000 AD but on a site lived and worshipped at by Celtic Christians since the 600s!) We had spent about an hour in silence there, asking God to show us what we might want or need to lament in our life, and then wrote it out and prayed it to God. It was a powerful time and moved some to quiet tears. There is something absolutely amazing, I think, about engaging deeply with God in places where people have been seeking and engaging with God for centuries and millennia - thin places, as they’re called.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ed93227f35cfc0f85c57a45/1a96bac3-26b5-442f-b251-bdfe3c3a78ce/1000004620.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Passing the Peace - Walking With Saints</image:title>
<image:caption>We also think and learn about the many, many nameless saints who, like us, were living their lives and seeking to remain faithful while needing to adapt to large and small shifts in their worlds. Shifts came about in England through the decision to follow Roman vs. Celtic Christianity, not both, Norman and Viking invasions, and the near complete destruction of monasteries and that way of life, to name a few. These ‘small s’ saints are part of “the great cloud of witnesses” as well, of course. How did they live out their faith in good, bad and cataclysmic times? Tying the Saints and saints together, we wonder why so many saints went on pilgrimages to the crypts or major places of importance for the Saints named above?</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ed93227f35cfc0f85c57a45/0a509970-45f0-4324-b38f-c62daf5e2e1c/1000004684.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Passing the Peace - Walking With Saints</image:title>
<image:caption>By bringing ourselves bodily to the places people worshiped, studied, lived and died centuries, if not millennia, ago, and practicing some spiritual practices that would have felt familiar to them, we can bridge the gap between ourselves and this part of the great cloud of witnesses. We literally walk a few miles in their shoes to places where they spent time – and maybe get wet or tired or develop blisters, as they surely did! Sometimes, we walk in silence and think about the pilgrims that walked these same paths before us, and the God and Saints that inspired them. We get to experience in a tiny way, or at least imagine, what their lives were like. They become our brothers and sisters in the Lord more fully. Their vision of God informs our understanding of God and gets merged with how we have actually encountered God as we’ve taken this journey. And so, we are changed and our Christian faith is broadened and deepened.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hi! I’m Judy (Kuzman), but a lot of people call me “judykuz”. I feel so honored to be joining this team and look forward to helping to create space for others to notice God’s presence in their lives. Being a part of the Spiritual Formation Certificate cohort was a true gift, and I’m excited to be diving into and learning through the Enneagram Certificate Program as well this session. On my favorite days you’ll probably find me...daydreaming, reading at the coast, lingering in a coffee shop with a friend, traveling with my daughter, or sitting in my backyard garden with a book of poetry. In the practical side of my life, I’ve spent many years (decades!) serving with a campus ministry, and now my focus is on member care and soul care. As a spiritual director and sabbatical guide, this truly feels like my sweet spot.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Recover!</image:title>
<image:caption>For many of us, September is the beginning of the year. January is month-number-one in name only, for September is truly the start of a new year of life as students head back to school, the NFL kicks off, and primetime TV networks launch new seasons. With my children all being in fall sports, September is for me the beginning of standing on sidelines chewing gum and pacing like Pete Carroll. September has also been deemed recovery month, and interestingly enough, “recover!” is one of the things I hear soccer coaches yelling at my son as I gnaw away at my sugar-free-peppermint anti-anxiety-aid.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Recovery</image:title>
<image:caption>When you hear the word recovery, what comes to mind? If you were to write an article on recovery, what would your article discuss? Does the word recovery call to mind images of a disheveled drug addict finally getting cleaned up, sober, and presentable? That is an accurate image, but is it, though? In the throes of my addiction, I was rarely disheveled and almost always presentable. In fact, I doubt you would have known me to be anything but upstanding, high-performing, and certainly respectable. As a mother, wife, schoolteacher, business owner, and college-educated church going woman, I had an image to maintain, and I did that well. So my version of recovery may be a little different from yours; the article I would write would be about recovering from the lies we tell ourselves.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hey! My name is Conrad. Most days you can find me on the road, paying visits to Hospice patients and their families offering them spiritual support and encouragement. I am new to this line of work, but it has already provided rich moments of encounter with God’s presence. Our default setting as New Englanders isn’t usually inclined to let others into our complex lives, but this line of ministry has offered a rare and precious opportunity to hold that space and that person’s story before the Lord. I am known for loving good food, good music and a good story. In my humble opinion, any (and all) of those things can serve as bridges, connecting people together.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hi! My name is Tess. It’s great to meet you! Most weekdays, you’ll find me in front of a computer screen or on the phone. In addition to the time I spend with the PAX team, I work for a non-profit raising funds and awareness to bring clean water to people in crisis in many parts of Africa. Whenever I can, I try to swap the computer and phone to be face-to-face with someone over a tea or mocha latte, or taking a walk together. I’m known for my love of dark chocolate and deep conversations, especially about God and what a walk of faith looks like as it intersects daily life. I make a mean lasagna and love to cook. I was born in the Midwest, and I like to think I’ve retained the warm midwestern welcoming spirit combined with a good dose of Yankee independence.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I love summer. Not because I’m an “in the water” person anymore—if that’s what you were picturing—but because I love the sun on my face and being near the water, especially the Maine coastline. I’ve been fortunate to live in Maine for the past 29 years. Within 18 minutes I can drive to my favorite rocky beach, set up my chair, and open a book. Summer for me is about slow mornings on my back deck, wearing sundresses and drinking iced beverages. And, as my sister-in-law declared in the late ’80s when she was a color analysis specialist, I’m a “SUMMER”—so it’s official. I tend to value the idea of naming in general and to title my summers in particular. There was The Soul-Sucking Summer of Sadness and another called God and I Have Found Our Place. This summer’s working title? Watching Things Grow.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Reflections on Pilgrimage: Renewed Day By Day</image:title>
<image:caption>So here is the lesson I learned. Not a nice 3-point sermon lesson, just one big concrete, tangible lesson summed up by Paul in 2 Cor 4:16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Reflections on Pilgrimage: Renewed Day By Day</image:title>
<image:caption>So my big life lesson was twofold from the WHW walking/hiking pilgrimage. First, outwardly we are wasting away. We felt our age. It wasn’t a bad thing, just a real thing. Time goes in a straight line. We can’t stay young and strong forever. And as time goes on, life is laced with losses and goodbyes which includes our physical strength. Sooner or later, we have to let go of what we used to be able to do, and enjoy what we are still able to do.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - This is Jacob</image:title>
<image:caption>Hi, I’m Jacob! Most days you can find me crunching numbers, organizing spreadsheets, and keeping administrative details organized—often with a coffee in hand and one (or both) of my mini-Bernedoodles curled up nearby. I am known for bringing calm to chaos and joy to the mundane. Whether I’m reconciling accounts or coordinating a church event, I find deep meaning in supporting others behind the scenes. I love helping people to better understand the complexities of the Bible. In college, I took all the classes I could on biblical literature, languages, history, geography, and archaeology. I enjoy walking with people through processes of religious deconstruction, in hopes that we can also experience a process of REconstruction, finding that God is far better than some misconceptions we may have learned earlier in life.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - This is Jacob</image:title>
<image:caption>Here are a few things you may not know about me! I grew up in Holland, Michigan and have the wooden shoes to prove it. I’m an Eagle Scout—yes, I can still tie the knots. I love collecting and learning odd instruments. Recent favorites: the otamatone and steel tongue drum. As a teenager, I had a mohawk that I’d dye different colors. I was as far from being a troublemaker as could be, but I liked subverting expectations. I have a standing offer to anyone: if you provide the slab of brisket, I’ll spend a day smoking it and host dinner. I would love to connect with you! Whether it’s to talk about the Bible, budgeting, or brisket, feel free to reach out.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - A Journey With Discernment</image:title>
<image:caption>The word “discernment” gets tossed around in a variety of spheres. I have had the privilege of being an admissions application reader for a professional school and a volunteer interviewer for my college alma mater. I have heard the “pros” in the business of higher ed admissions refer to the decision-making of candidates as discernment. Inculcating the vocabulary of that field, I find myself using it with my career advisees as they try to figure out whether to take a job that pays less than they were expecting, but at least gets them some concrete experience, as opposed to waiting for the “right” job, which may not, or ever, come. To date, they have never asked me what I mean by “discernment,” and I have not offered. It just seemed like one of those cool, pseudo-metaphysical terms, like “meaning making,” “meeting the moment,” and re-imagining, that a sagacious pop-culture intellectual puts out there and everyone gets.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - God’s Boundless Love</image:title>
<image:caption>I don’t remember how I first heard of PAX, but it came across my path and got my attention. I believe things are never random with God and so curiosity led me to ask questions. I had observed that on the whole people including myself, had become poor listeners. I attribute it to all the noise in our world, the pace of life, the internet. It’s hard to go anywhere these days without a television in the background, or music playing and if you are unfortunate enough to drive in the city then its beeping horns and blaring sirens. Our minds are bombarded with information from every direction and it’s getting more difficult to focus. It’s hard to find quiet space or even hear the person talking to us from across the table.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - A Reflection For the Season of Pentecost</image:title>
<image:caption>"When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them….</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - This is Iela</image:title>
<image:caption>Hi, I’m Iela! Most days you can find me trying to convince my 11-month-old to take a nap or walking outside in all types of weather. I am known for my Beyonce’s, “Single Ladies”, dance moves and my desire to always try to see another person’s point of view. People often refer to me as “an old soul”. I’ve got a grandma bedtime and grew up with a sister who is 5 years older than me, so I’ve got one foot in the Millennials and another with the Gen Zs. I got married and trained as a spiritual director right out of college and I used to be afraid to show my full goofy side as I felt like it wouldn’t be seen as wise or thoughtful. BUT, over the years I’ve learned it actually just helps others feel more comfortable being themselves as well!</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - This is Iela</image:title>
<image:caption>When I am not working for PAX, you can find me lost in a fiction novel, outside moving my body, loving on my daughter, exploring with my husband, or trying not to spend money on another pizza or latte… A few other things you may or may not know about me are that: I was an absolutely terrible eater as a child. Now, I love trying new food! I get overwhelmed when I have too many demands on my time and thrive with more margin. I once spent 20 straight days in the Montana wilderness. I attended the same church for the first 21 years of my life and loved it. I play four different instruments and love making music, but am terrible at practicing so odds are you will never hear me play…</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - This is Andrea</image:title>
<image:caption>Hi I’m Andrea! Finding joy in the ordinary is one of my guideposts. Author Henri Nouwen, says it best “Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day.” Noticing God in the small everyday joy filled moments has led me to a very full life with the simplest things. A gratitude list and the “Friday Five” (listing 5 things that were life giving to me this week) continue to be two of my most frequent and life giving Spiritual practices.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A few more things to note about me: 1. Sweatshirts are my love language. 2. I ran the Boston marathon in April 2025. It was a lifelong dream I didn’t know I had nor thought I would ever accomplish. 3. I am truly solar powered - a few days without even just a moment spent in the sunshine and I am withering. 4. I love homemade sourdough bread, but I love ice cream even more. 5. I grew up Catholic and am very thankful for the liturgical words and seasons, even though as a kid I despised them.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hi, I’m Rama! Most days you can find me exploring a new place to walk or trying not to drink my third cup of coffee… I am known for making great pancakes and asking deep questions. People often refer to me as fun. When I was younger, this seemed like a good handle in peer group settings. As I got older, it began to bother me as I wanted to be thought of as more than “just” fun. But now I embrace it! I recognize what a gift it is to be able to play and help others do so as well. My life is marked by a deep desire to enjoy God and the gift of one another.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - This is Rama</image:title>
<image:caption>What I am most passionate about in life is my family. One of the greatest joys is being a Mother, and now a Grandmother! I am now very ok as my daughter’s sing their refrain, “Rama is a really fun Mom!” I am ready to be a fun Grandmother :) Through PAX, I teach and serve people who are yearning to grow closer to God. It is a privilege to guide people into practices that help them to connect with God and experience His transforming love. I believe the church can be an agent of change through listening, and a place to experience the love and acceptance of God. When I am not busy working for PAX, you can catch me reading mystery novels or watching mystery shows on Brit Box with my husband. You will also catch me hiking the mountains of NH and enjoying an afternoon by Newfound Lake.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Our Feet & Holy Week</image:title>
<image:caption>I think it is safe to say that a theme of Holy Week is Jesus doing the unexpected…not only does Jesus humble himself by riding in on a donkey, but later, at the last supper he shared with his disciples before his death, he washes their feet… This was far from being an unexpected event at a dinner. It was a common sign of hospitality to wash the feet of your guests as the roads walked were dusty & sandals were the shoe of choice. Yet, it was always a servant, or even slave, of the household that performed the task. The lowest socially ranked person in the room was meant to touch the guests dirty feet, certainly not the host, & definitely not a guest of honor. Yet, Jesus had a way of flipping the script & sure enough, he paused during the evening meal to take on the foot washing task for his disciples. Two points come to mind as I ponder this significant moment marked in history.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - A Lenten Check In</image:title>
<image:caption>As Lent started this year, I felt some resistance to fasting. While I have gained much in these last 9-months with my new daughter, I have also had to let go of a lot of my familiar anchors as well. Leaning into the new has frequently meant letting go of the old (a process deeply rooted in spiritual formation!). I know deep in my bones that it is transforming me for the better, but the process can still leave me feeling a bit off kilter. With all these feelings, fasting from something else was not on my bingo card for year 1 of parenting. Coffee? Not going to give up that caffeine hit on little sleep! Chocolate? That’s a breastfeeding craving! Netflix? Keeps me awake for night feedings! Perhaps, you felt a similar push back going through your own list. Yet, with each thought, I knew from years past that the seasons of preparation in the church calendar, such as Lent and Advent, have felt necessary to enter the next season of rejoicing.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Gifts For Jesus - (This reflection was written for the arrival of Epiphany, but can be read it any time when you are wondering what you might have to bring to the manger.)</image:title>
<image:caption>"After they had heard the king, they went on their way, & the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, & they bowed down & worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures & presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense & myrrh.” - Matthew 2:9-11</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - A Word for 2025.</image:title>
<image:caption>Do you choose a word for each new year? I started this tradition two years ago and have been surprised at how much I've loved it. This year, I sat in the post Christmas day pause, while my family chattered downstairs and my daughter slept in the other room, and waited to see if another word came to me this year. As I sat in the relative stillness, the word that rose to the surface was “release.” This is a concept that came up in my last spiritual direction session with my own director and has continued to ground me since. Recently, an extended family member shared their long earned parenting advice of, “if all else fails, lower your expectations…”</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - “I’ll Wait For You…”</image:title>
<image:caption>…is a line used in many a romance story. The words are a declaration of love usually spoken when there is a need for the romantic leads to be apart for a length of time. We often know, when we hear this line, it is far from the end of the story. As we well know, advent is a season of waiting. When Christmas comes we finally celebrate the arrival of Jesus' birth. Yet, even this is not the end of the story, not even a little bit. As Christians, we live in the constant tension of the here but not yet. God's presence is with us, but we are still waiting for the day when He will come again and we will live in the fullness of Christ's love. In some ways, we have all whispered a promise of love to God of “I'll wait for you.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Author, Tish Harrison Warren, has a book called Prayer in The Night: For Those Who Work or Watch or Weep. It isn't written for Advent, yet it is quite fitting for this season of waiting in darkness for the light of Christ to arrive. This week we lit the third candle on our Advent wreath, also known as the Shepherd's candle. We may be so familiar with the line in Luke 2:8, “And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night” that it has lost its punch. Yet, doesn't this make the Shepherds exactly one of those who work, watch, & maybe even weep by night? As any farmer knows, there are no “off the clock” hours. If an animal or crop needs you, you are always on call.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Sleep in Heavenly Peace?</image:title>
<image:caption>Each year we hear & sing the familiar words in the carol, Silent Night, “sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace.” I don't know about you, but the last time I feel like I slept anywhere close to “in heavenly peace” was well before the birth of my daughter who loves her nighttime comfort snuggles! Yet, even without a baby, it can be deeply difficult to quiet our minds, calm our bodies, & rest in peace. In fact, anxiety often hits harder at night as distractions are eliminated, darkness brings a sense of the unknown, & tiredness make worries feel heavier. With all of this, you may find yourself wondering, how can we truly be at peace when the world never seems to be?</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Does Hope Make A Difference?</image:title>
<image:caption>Sometimes the villain gets it right…or if not “right” they at least can be used in a story to illustrate profound truths about human nature. The villain in on one of my favorite young adult fiction novels illustrates this perfectly with the quote, “Hope. It is the only thing stronger than fear.” And isn’t this a profound truth. Even the original Christmas villain, King Herod, sought to kill baby Jesus because he knew that even a whisper of a newborn king would be a threat to his rule. It would bring hope to those he sought to oppress & too much of hope was not something he wanted.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Living In Transition</image:title>
<image:caption>Our family has been in transition for the past two years. It began with my Mother & moving her into a retirement home. Which was an emotional & draining season as we downsized, packed up, & sold her home of 40 years! Then my daughter & her husband packing up & moving & her husband starting a new job. Then there is my husband, who announced his retirement in January to the church he has been pastoring for the past 30 years. His retirement also means we are moving out of our home, the parsonage, & following our family to NH. This brings with it saying goodbye to where we raised our children, made lifelong friends, & a community we love dearly. Oh, & lest I forget the highlight, we welcomed two Granddaughters this summer. Lots & lots of transitions!</image:caption>

Wherever you stand on the political spectrum, perhaps, like us, you are experiencing difficulty in finding the words to pray in this challenging season. You may be asking God… How do I voice what I feel is right while still listening to my neighbor? How do I continue attending my church if not all of my fellow parishioners share my same views? <image:title>Passing the Peace - The Thread of Becoming a Spiritual Director</image:title>
<image:caption>I have felt the pull to ministry for the majority of my life, and as I look back over the years and the different phases that I went through I can certainly see a thread connecting it all together. I often feel like my journey to becoming a spiritual director is long and winding, but the reality is that if I trace my life back through the thread, this is the point God was leading me to all along. I felt “called” to ministry at summer camp in South Carolina when I was 14 years old. At that point in time the only context I had for being in the ministry was either becoming a pastor or a missionary, and as my father was a pastor I did not feel particularly inclined toward that. So I assumed I would be a missionary, and when I went to college in Nashville, TN I pursued a degree in “Religion and the Arts” because I wanted to fuse my love of art with the call I felt to ministry. While I enjoyed my classes, I really wanted some practical, hands-on skills for helping people which led me to discovering social work. I immediately added it as a second major and still to this day think it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Receiving God’s Love</image:title>
<image:caption>I enrolled for the Spiritual Formation Certificate program with PAX last summer, intending to learn for the sake of others. As a spiritual director, I work with many different people both individually and in groups, and I assumed this class would increase my knowledge: I would learn about spiritual formation so I could lead others deeper into it; I would learn about racial identity so that I could guide others as they discovered their own stories and values; I would learn about Sabbath, and confession, and soul care groups all for the sake of then helping others as they sorted out their own practices and thoughts and relationship with God. Yet, as I opened that first book I heard a whisper from God saying, Yes, you will be able to lead, guide, help others, but you will only be able to do these things as you let me lead, guide, and help you first.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - The Authority of Compassion</image:title>
<image:caption>Who or what comes to mind when you think of the word “authority?” How about the word “compassion?” The way I perceive these words drastically changed when we read Henri Nouwen’s The Return of the Prodigal Son in my TL1 course. Deeply moved by Rembrandt’s painting of the Prodigal Son, Nouwen presents a message of depth and beauty as he reflects on the parable through the lens of this inspiring art piece. One aspect he hones in on is how the Father’s hands communicate a powerful message in how they are placed on the wayward son’s back.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Stories from Spiritual Direction</image:title>
<image:caption>Over my forty-five years of being a follower of Christ I have experienced a lot of spiritual practices, many before I ever learned the term “spiritual practice.” I have learned which ones bring me life, which ones feel dry, and which ones fit different seasons of my life. I often say to people that the reason there are hundreds of different spiritual practices is that we are all different and not every practice is for every person. But secretly, in my heart of hearts, I think everyone should do the practice of spiritual direction! In this busy world, where do you find the time and space to spend an hour of dedicated time each month to focus on your relationship with God? Seriously, think about that for a minute. There is something about the consistency of these meetings that brings focus and attention to my relationship with God and has helped form it into one of the most important things in my life.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Invitations for Holding</image:title>
<image:caption>An invitation was extended to me by a good friend to attend PAX’s Lenten Day Apart Retreat in Essex, MA. This was the first time since pre-pandemic that I’ve spent time in a church building. This was also my very first experience participating in a PAX event - needless to say, I arrived with anticipation and openness to what the day would hold. Our morning began gathered in a small room, holding warm cups of coffee and tea, introducing ourselves and getting acquainted before the day of silence commenced. Our facilitators, Andrea and Iela, created a warm atmosphere for connection and outlined logistics: Participant introductions & the day’s schedule. A centering prayer and invitation to consider what it means to be offered gardening imagery throughout scripture in relation to our own walk with the Divine. Three hours of silence, to be spent however felt most comfortable - within the building, out for a walk etc, with the option to join in community for a lunch hour shared in silence. A closing sharing-circle with moments of silence held in community for each person present.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Waiting</image:title>
<image:caption>One of my daughter’s favorite books is from the Elephant & Piggie series by Mo Willems called “Waiting Is Not Easy!”. It is a story about Elephant’s struggle to be patient while waiting for the surprise that Piggie, his best friend, has for him. At first Elephant is excited, curious, & patient. His anticipation for the surprise has him on edge as he gleefully wonders what Piggie could have in store for him. As Elephant probes Piggie for hints, Piggie informs him that he needs to wait because the surprise is not ready yet. The longer Elephant has to wait the more irritable & irrational he becomes. Elephant is so frustrated that by the end of the waiting period, he questions his friend’s intentions & whether or not the surprise was worth waiting for at all (turns out, it is!). Even though it is a children’s story, Elephant’s struggle to keep it together as he waits for the surprise is something I think we can all relate with. Waiting is really hard. Waiting can make us feel vulnerable & exposed. It makes us realize that we lack control & forces us to deal with uncertainty.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - “Three-Mile-An-Hour God”</image:title>
<image:caption>A few years ago in a seminary class, I read something that referred to Jesus as the “three-mile-an-hour God.” Jesus could have walked as fast as he wanted to. He could have gotten from one place to another in no time at all, but he walked at our pace. This was a choice made in love. Jesus walked slowly in order to walk with us. These days, we tend to move fast. We are BUSY & we have places to be! Things to do! We can’t move faster than we are physically able, but we’ll certainly try! I work with college students, & this is truer than ever. I’ve never seen a group of students who were busier or had less time than these. It makes it challenging to get a quick meeting in, let alone get to any kind of discipleship or deeper work (& don’t even get me started on coordinating schedules to try meeting with more than one student at the same time).</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - A Story of Silence</image:title>
<image:caption>The details of that traumatic morning are mostly hazy. I probably woke up to the sound of my mom’s voice as she gently nursed me out of my dream world. “婷婷, 該起床了.” I probably rubbed my eyes, ate a hot breakfast, then walked to school with my neighbors, ready for another day at my new school in America. A seemingly ordinary day. Back then, I responded best to “婷婷,” Tingting, my Chinese nickname. 婷婷 was the only name I had ever known until second grade, the year we moved from Taiwan to America. “婷婷,” meaning doubly “graceful” & “dainty” were not words I would have chosen to describe myself. I disliked my Chinese name as a child because I was a climb-up-a-tree-&-dangle-upside-down kind of gal. Dainty? Graceful? Forget it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Choosing A Listening Space</image:title>
<image:caption>I know I want to talk to someone, but who do I talk to? How do I choose between seeing a therapist, a life coach or a spiritual director? I recently found myself asking this question & thought it would be a great one to have a broader conversation around. But before I get too far, I want to first say that if you know you need support in some way, don’t let finding the answer to this question block you. Simply choose someone & give it a try. All three of these listening spaces are filled with people who are ready to be there for you to help process things emotionally, spiritually, & mentally. Letting yourself feel heard may be the first step in discerning which one of these spaces feels the most supportive to you in this season of life. So, how did I get to the point of asking this question? In my personal life, I have seen both a life coach & a spiritual director & loved every minute of both. In my vocational life, I am certified as a spiritual director through PAX & am currently pursuing my license in mental health counseling. I am a huge supporter of all three of these spaces & appreciate different aspects of each one.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Walking…A Day At A Time</image:title>
<image:caption>Something I do almost every day, no matter the weather, is go for a walk. Walking, for me, is not only a form of exercise, but a way to recharge & spend time with God. A few years ago, my husband & I went on our first walking pilgrimage in Europe…& we were hooked! This past month we were finally able to return for another one & completed the 100-mile journey through the Cotswolds, a region in central-southwest England known for its outstanding natural beauty. It is the third largest protected landscape in England covering 787 square miles. And it was indeed beautiful! We walked for ten days anywhere from 8 to 13 miles per day. Going on these walking pilgrimages is something we thoroughly enjoy. We love being outside in nature, enjoying the fresh air & exercise, meeting people & hearing their stories, eating good food, & living off-line. Through it all, I heard God’s gentle voice helping me to process the year & tune in to how He has been present with me.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Walking…A Day At A Time - I wonder how often this happens in my spiritual life. God has marked out my path & I am confident of His guidance & yet… “Lord, there is something in the path that feels intimidating & scary. Is there another way, or another path that will get me to the same place?” In the case of the cows, I chose to brave brambles & nettles & prickers coming out on the other side with scratches & burning, itching skin. But I avoided those cows! I wonder if God was whispering, “Rama, the cows would have been a whole lot easier.” How many times are we on the path marked out for us by God & then get scared or intimidated by something standing in the way? How many wounds & scars & scratches do we add to our journey trying to protect ourselves, & not trust in God’s presence & protection? We had a few more large animal moments (not to mention the sign saying “bull in field”), but we made our way safely without any injuries &, for the most part, stayed on the path marked for us.</image:title>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Walking…A Day At A Time - It was in these times that I was able to hear about their life stories & to share mine. Whether American, English or Belgian, we discover our connectedness as human beings; we discover & share in some of the same joys & sorrows in life. A mutuality & bonding develops that is genuine & precious as we walk together. At the end of this walk, we visited with friends in England we made on a similar walk five years ago. Again, there was a sharing of where we were in life & stories to catch up on. We shared with a sense of vulnerability & intimacy. My lesson was a reminder that it is good & ok to find our stride & go at our pace; but it is also good & necessary to adjust our pace & not miss out on walking with others. Here is where we find the relational companionship of compassion, kindness, wisdom, vulnerability & intimacy that brings joy in life.</image:title>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - A House in Progress - For as long as I can remember, I have daydreamed about a house.</image:title>
<image:caption>The house would be small, but adaptable - with old furniture and a bright kitchen, the whole thing warm, comfortable, and on a big piece of land. But most importantly, the house would be full of people. All of my friends and all of my family could come and stay anytime they wanted, for as long as they wanted, and could spend time doing the things they love to do, away from the pressures of everyday life. Occasionally, I used to describe the house to friends. They were always excited about the idea of gathering people together, of sharing resources and creativity, but I never really took it seriously until I met a few friends in college who looked at me and said, we could do that. And so we decided to do it - to pursue the dream of cultivating a place to gather, to seek God together, to make art, to ask questions. We decided to build the house. We called it the Monastery, envisioning an environment for contemplation and spiritual formation through communal work and personal creative endeavor. We were idealistic; we took ourselves too seriously, but we couldn’t help it - the prospect was exciting! And now, after years of waiting and planning, we are weeks away from moving onto a piece of family land, preparing to repair an unfinished, abandoned cabin in the hopes that it will become something bigger. It is finally time to begin.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - A House in Progress - As I prepare to move into an actual unfinished building, bringing my plan drawings and designs for the physical project along with me, I am particularly struck by the idea of the Spirit knowing the whole design of our spiritual houses, but only showing us one step at a time as we collaborate in the repairs happening to our souls. I am reminded that while I may have a vision for how my life (both physical and spiritual) will look, the Spirit’s design will likely be far more expansive, inclusive, and unexpected than what I have in mind.</image:title>
<image:caption>Reflecting back on the Spiritual Formation Certificate class, I would add to my definition of formation: spiritual formation is about inviting others into our spiritual houses so that we can discern and celebrate those next steps in the design together. I find myself curious about the state of my own spiritual house - is it only broken down because I see it that way? What about the house is already beautiful? Where have I failed to celebrate progress? How can I invite others in? As I ponder these questions regarding my spiritual landscape and prepare for this transition to repairing a physical house, I invite you to join the neighborhood and consider your own spiritual house, your own experience of being made in the image of God. What is your house like? Is it a place where you feel at home? Do you have an opportunity to make a repair, invite someone in, celebrate what is already beautiful? What might it look like for you to invite the Holy Spirit into your house?</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - On Becoming A Spiritual Director</image:title>
<image:caption>Do you remember as a kid being asked the question “What would you like to do when you grow up?” I dreaded that question as I never knew what I wanted to do. I was generally able to come up with some sort of answer, but I was never fully satisfied with my response & often struggled to imagine my potential. During my junior year of college, I was sitting on the college green with the giant paper handbook of “Choosing a Major.” The deadline was looming & I needed to decide what to major in. I was good at math, but I didn't want to spend my days crunching numbers. Blood scared me, so a degree in nursing was out. Teaching seemed reasonable, but I wasn't thrilled about the program at my university. I felt really stuck. I wanted to commit to doing something that I enjoyed & that I was good at.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Living Lent - Well, that was different! - I don’t know about you, but as a kid, I grew up with a deep desire to understand & feel my faith. When that understanding or feeling, didn’t materialize, there were moments of thinking: “I wasn’t chosen.”, “I must be doing it wrong.”, or “The bible is too confusing.”</image:title>
<image:caption>I am shocked to say that for too long I saw these feelings as a sign that I needed to change & “do something to fix it” until well into my adult years. It took finding a faith community willing to practice reading, sitting with, & praying the scripture for me to allow my experiences of faith to not have to look a certain way, but to just be as they are.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Does God Really Laugh At Our Plans? - What parts of your life do you share with God? Are there some things that come up easily in prayer & other things that feel hard to mention at all? A common thread I’ve noticed in conversation with others, is that sometimes it feels difficult to share our plans with God. We may know intellectually that God already knows the desires of our heart, but actually bringing them forward in prayer can still take a lot of courage.</image:title>
<image:caption>After getting engaged to my now husband, I received a lot of surprised responses from new people I met on how young I was to be getting married. A lot of prayer, conversation, & discernment had gone into the decision to move forward in engagement, yet, hearing these responses brought back doubts in my head. They were right, I was young! I felt ready, but was I actually ready? Had I missed something along the way while making my plans? I would quickly quiet this voice in my head, but it kept persisting & it was some time before I actually sat down to have an honest conversation with God about it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Advent Week 4: Love</image:title>
<image:caption>Only a week to go until we celebrate the birth of Jesus. Each year we are swamped with siren calls to spend, lovely images that lure us to expectations of a beautiful Christmas surrounded by well-fed, manicured & polished friends & family who smile & sing & dance & give us amazing gifts. Advent asks us to put that vision aside to recognize the essence of God as revealed in a human child. For me this year, a year that has held grief as well as growth, God’s essence is revealed in Love. Love—the four letter word that means nothing & everything. In January of this year, my husband died unexpectedly of COVID. I found myself in a strange new world & a new role of “widow”. As I experienced the loss of a primary source of human love in my life for 46 years, friends & family came around me offering love that I had rarely experienced.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Advent Week 4: Love</image:title>
<image:caption>As I searched these events for examples of God’s love at work in these very human lives, I saw the events we celebrate at Christmas go beyond colorful pictures from a long-loved story to become love-infused, clear evidence of the living God who is still as active & alive in our daily lives as God was active in the Nativity. This year my Advent practice is answering this question each day: “Today, in this life I am living, where is Love?” Where is love in your life? What does it look like? In what hidden places do you find God’s love? What circumstances blind you to recognizing the love of God in your life? What circumstances reveal the reality of God’s love bursting into your everyday life?</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Advent Week 3: Joy</image:title>
<image:caption>What Christmas music do you find yourself returning to each year? Like many years before, I’m still listening to Nat King Cole’s album, “The Christmas Song”. While each year I dabble in a few new Christmas songs & albums, nothing lifts me up into the joy of the Christmas season like Nat King Cole’s album. I find myself remembering my childhood home dimly lit by the many Christmas lights & a roaring fire. I remember my younger sister & I putting together the always confusing Christmas tree, frustrated but laughing the whole time. The music reminds me of the countless joys I’ve shared with friends, family, & strangers. When I come back into the present moment, I’m prompted to open my eyes to the joy that is currently before me. I think to myself, “this too is a moment to cherish & thank God for.” So much is different from many of those early memories, that it startles me at times, but I’m finding that there is still new joy to be received. The same younger sister is now married & has welcomed a son into our lives who I now get to spend this Advent season thinking of all the ways my wife & I will spoil this beautiful nephew on his first Christmas. The joy overflows in these moments.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Advent Week 3: Joy</image:title>
<image:caption>As we sit in our past experiences with the help of those that love each of us, we can begin to remember the joys that we have already received. We can also be encouraged that God leads us into joy. Even in solitude, God is with us, asking us to dance with him in the joys of the season we are in. While I find that the process of remembering & opening my eyes to my present moment help me receive that joy that God has for me, each of us experiences joy differently. God will fulfill his promises, joy & all, no matter where we are in our journeys. What about you? What joys have you experienced in the past during this season? What promises do you see being fulfilled this season?</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Advent Week 2: Peace</image:title>
<image:caption>When I was first asked to reflect on the theme of peace, linked with this text from Luke, I wasn’t too sure of the connection! Nowhere in the text can the word “peace” be found. But as I pondered, I thought: “Isn’t that just like peace…it’s so desirable, yet so elusive!” As I pondered further, I began to wonder if what was going on in Mary’s heart wasn’t a growing sense of peace, as she began to experience it. Dipping into last week’s text, I imagine Mary filled with anxiety, far from peace & “greatly troubled” as Luke describes it, as the angel Gabriel woke her up with news that didn’t seem so good at that early hour! However, as Mary begins to take this news to heart, she becomes more at peace with it, ready to serve God however He calls. Her sense of peace continues to grow as she hurries to her relative Elizabeth’s house & is met there with the affirmation of the Spirit, speaking to Mary through Elizabeth. Finally, her peace reaches a confident peak as she bursts into song, celebrating the upheaval she perceives God will bring about as He remembers (acts on) his mercy & begins, through what He is doing in Mary, to bring to an end the spiritual, political, social, & economic chaos that has turned our world upside down.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Advent Week 2: Peace</image:title>
<image:caption>As I think Jesus would have responded: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Blessed are those who, having entered into the family of God through the life, death, & resurrection of the child born of Mary, endeavor to live into the family likeness by pursuing harmony, flourishing, & wholeness in whatever situation they find themselves. How might you be a lifeboat of God’s peace in the troubled waters of today’s turbulent world, while you anticipate the beauty & fullness of the lasting calm that awaits in God’s new creation?</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Advent Week 1: Hope</image:title>
<image:caption>Advent means “coming” & this definition almost inadvertently accompanies a sense of waiting, whether that is joyful waiting, a difficult waiting, or perhaps it is a waiting with some combination of both. Waiting just comes with a gamut of emotions. Throughout the Old Testament & the Gospel accounts, we find the Israelites waiting for the coming of a powerful Messiah figure. The expectation was that God would rescue the nation from the clutches of their oppressors as He had done for them on many occasions before, starting with their rescue from slavery in Egypt generations ago.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Advent Week 1: Hope</image:title>
<image:caption>However, God’s favor is a hopeful reminder that God will finish what He has started & that He does not abandon His people. God’s favor gives hopeful confidence that He will accomplish all that He has promised. Yes, God’s favor is His sustaining, surprising, & abundant response to His people, inspiring hope. What about you? What “waiting for the coming of” can you bring before Jesus this Advent season? In what areas of your life are you asking God to shed His favor – His sustaining, surprising, abundant response – upon to inspire hope?</image:caption>

<image:caption>“To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes.” - Isaiah 61:3 Art had always been my favorite subject in school, & when I ran out of art classes to take in high school, I signed up for photography. With a heavy manual film camera in my hand, I ventured into nearby trails for my school assignments & started to notice things that I would have missed if I didn't have a lens that needed to be focused on specific details. I noticed tiny growths in the midst of the moss, the branches that bent in unique shapes that caught the sunlight, & textures that perhaps my eyes would have glanced over with the deep depth of focus that our eyes have. Years later, my mother, who felt like a part of me, passed away in my mid-twenties. I was tasked to death-clean her belongings, & because I was living on the opposite coast, I couldn’t take most of her possessions with me.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The things that I wanted to keep the most were photographs that captured her essence & our memories. A single photo can have that much power. As I wrapped up my first career to prepare for motherhood, photography became my second career. I photographed people who wanted their best sides & best moments preserved into family history. A precious photo print that will outlast our lives & be passed onto the next generations. I’ve photographed many at a prior session without realizing this may be their funeral portrait. I’ve photographed couples from their weddings followed by every year of their child’s life.</image:caption>

While I captured their livelihood & beauty, they may see weight gain or wrinkles or a hair out of place.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Beauty for Ashes: Photography as a Spiritual Practice</image:title>
<image:caption>I didn’t start my photography journey for it to be a job. I grew to love it because of the connection I felt with beauty in nature that my camera could preserve, & be shared later without needing a single word out of my mouth. The beauty that was created by God needed no introduction. “Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, & tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith.” - Luke 12:27-28</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Beauty for Ashes: Photography as a Spiritual Practice</image:title>
<image:caption>When I see certain flowers, a special cloud, a pattern in a new sprout combined with a mist, or a filtered sunlight, I’m amazed that it’s in front of me like a secret code for me to discover in broad daylight. I rush to grab my camera & the appropriate lens & scroll through the settings to capture the intrigue of a beautiful detail. And as I frame the shot, or wait for the wind to stop swaying the petals, my mind quiets down & my breathing steadies. In those moments, it feels like God is showing me how much intent & thought went into every detail of his creation, the Romans 8:28 promise…”And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” How the sun transforms a leaf into a glowing jewel, or how the budding flower will never have this exact color in its petals again in the duration of its short life. Color combinations that will never look good on paper, come together harmoniously in God’s creations. The equipment in my hands allows me to see the patterns in a small insect that I wouldn’t have seen otherwise.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The equipment allows me to blur out the weeds & peeling paint in my small garden, & fill my view(finder) with this flower that’s made of countless petals & the pollen that feeds the busy bees. It’s pure & fragile, vast & intricate, perfect yet flawed, & when it is captured, no matter how vibrant or how busy the details are, it creates a place of peace for my soul, an intimate connection to God’s heart. A serenity & calm that couldn’t be marked without photography.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Finding Recovery</image:title>
<image:caption>In early 2022 I found myself sitting in a job interview for a pastoral role for an inner-city church campus. The team asked me, “What experience do you have working with people experiencing homelessness & addiction, i.e., with those in recovery?” My honest answer was, “Not much… But I do love people & I hope that will go a long way.” Fortunately, that team took a risk on me. Because in the seven months since I started my new role as missional ministry & campus pastor, I have gotten to know a whole lot of wonderful folks whose lives have been derailed by addiction, by abuse, by growing up in an unhealthy family, or any number of other factors. After many years serving in more comfortable environments, I found myself being stretched in ways that made me glad for my journey in spiritual direction & for a more contemplative journey of faith. I find myself meeting & relying on God a whole lot more, since I feel like I have a whole lot less to offer.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A mentor once told me, “Others may argue with your theology, but they can’t argue with your experience.” This powerful statement often reminds me to never discount my story or experiences; to stand confident in recognizing the thread of God throughout my life; & to fully acknowledge this thread as I encounter Him through conversations, relationships, events, emotions, difficulties, new concepts, & opportunities. With this in mind, I would be amiss if I didn’t include as a part of my thread the discovery of the Enneagram – a most relevant tool that not only enables & positions me to experience growth, healing, & restoration on a continually basis, but enables me to help others on their own journey to greater intimacy & transformation. Recently, my husband showed me a Facebook post declaring, “You are not an Enneagram number!” My response was somewhere between laughter & sadness, as this invalidation was void of so much understanding.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Daydreaming With God</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve always been kind-of a daydreamer. As a preteen, I would often disappear & wander, sometimes for hours, in the woods & fields near our New Jersey home with only a family dog for company. What was I thinking about & doing? I don’t really know. In my teenage years, I often did the same on horseback. Now, mind you, I love being around people as well. In fact, many people might think I’m quite the extrovert. But these musings in my head & heart comprise at least part of each of my days even now. No surprise, then, that a pivotal experience of God the Spirit came to me as I sat daydreaming & ostensibly reading my Bible on the farmhouse-style front porch of our home in Vermont. I was going to be alone at home for a couple of days—an unusual occurrence for a mother of three during the summer—& had loose plans for a number of adventures. I thought I might go hiking, or explore a quaint town nearby with a friend. All those got pushed to the side as God met me there on that porch. The experience of God being with me was palpable. He showed me some things that it would be good for me to deal with from my past & in my present. Not all at once, mind you, but at least a couple of key things right away.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Daydreaming With God</image:title>
<image:caption>The value of my times of ‘daydreamy’ communion with God was brought home to me powerfully last July, when I had a traumatic accident while backpacking with my husband. We are avid hikers & backpackers & are section-hiking The Long Trail in Vermont. We were on the third day of a long-weekend backpack when I slipped & free-fell off a cliff - about 20 feet. It all happened so fast that I didn’t have time to think much or say a prayer or even have “my life flash before my eyes.” Nope. I just fell. As I lay there awaiting rescue & during the long rescue operation—from the time I fell until the time I was put in an ambulance took 12 hours—I spent a lot of time talking to & leaning into God. As I’d experienced through the years, I again felt God powerfully with me & in me. I didn’t know the end of that traumatic chapter of my story yet but I did know that my Creator & Sustainer was with me & that was a great comfort.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When I was a child, one of my parents adoringly referred to me as the peacekeeper. That title became a much more rigorous position to uphold as factions within my sibling group quite literally tore my family apart. Suddenly, I was no longer just the peacekeeper. I became the mediator. I became the placater. I became the adviser & I became the pretender. I knew how to create a safe space in a room full of hostility, often at the cost of my own sense of safety. Somewhere as these traumatic events continued to shape my circumstances, within myself a cry for true peace was rendered to God.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - What is Spiritual Direction?</image:title>
<image:caption>What is spiritual direction? This is a question I have been asked many times, often after someone asked what my parents did for a living. As a kid, I used to say it is like spiritual counseling, but as I have grown older & become a spiritual director myself, my answer has continued to evolve. So, what is spiritual direction? Well, to really answer that question is to understand that spiritual direction is an experience. An experience of the presence of God in the company of a fellow believer & like most experiences, it can be hard to describe with just words. During my senior year of college, I had the privilege of completing a live-in internship for 3 months with a Christian environmental center in British Columbia, Canada called A Rocha. While there, they shared with us this quote,</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - Walking in Freedom: Finding Our Relational Security in Christ</image:title>
<image:caption>When I was a young girl, my family lived on a farm. I would often spend all day playing outside & as the second oldest of four, I followed my older brother everywhere. I wanted to be just like him, & we often got into competitions as I wanted to prove that I could do everything he could do. My father had told me I could do anything I put my mind to & I believed him. Yet, as we got older, organized sports entered the mix. For the first time, I was told that I could no longer do everything my older brother did. Not because I wasn’t capable, but because I was a girl. I was crest fallen & confused. All I could hear was, “You’re good at everything the boys do, but we’re still not going to let you do it.” And so began my crusade. I needed to prove that I was not just as good, but better. And so now my young life began to be formed & shaped by proving & pushing & striving so that I would be seen & not excluded. If you are familiar with the enneagram, you may already have picked up some early signs of an enneagram 3.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - What Does Passing the Peace Mean to Me in Light of Who I Am?</image:title>
<image:caption>My earliest memories of coming to America as an immigrant child are punctuated by complicated feelings of welcome & alienation. Both feelings found a home within me. During different seasons & at various settings, I have felt welcomed, content with being in my body & at rest with my identity as God’s beloved daughter. I have also felt displaced & homeless at other times, questioning whether I belonged & why people couldn’t see the beauty I see within. Feelings of alienation are all too familiar for those of us who identify as Asian American. Alienation shows up when we are told to “Go back to where you came from!” It shows up when we are assumed to lack personality or a voice for not seeking the limelight.</image:caption>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - What Does Passing the Peace Mean to Me in Light of Who I Am? - In light of my identity as a daughter of the King, passing the peace means settling for nothing less than seeing myself & others as beloved children who are worthy of being seen, heard, & known. Our God, the ultimate host, welcomes all to His table to feast & eat their fill. Yet the reality is that sometimes, even when a beautiful feast is set, those on the inside lock the door so others cannot come in; or worse, curious onlookers see a distorted view of the feast & its Host, & they refuse to draw near.</image:title>

<image:title>Passing the Peace - How We Named Our Blog</image:title>
<image:caption>I grew up in a church where every week we would pause at one point in the service to “pass the peace.” Snuck in between the children’s moment & the scripture reading, we would be invited to turn to the people around us, greet each other, shake hands, & say, “Peace of Christ.” As we all began to turn to each other, the noise would slowly begin to grow & fill the sanctuary as you could hear laughter, some shouts from across the room & see silent peace signs being held up to those too far away to shake hands with. Inevitably the sound would begin to slowly die out as people returned to their seats, & then the pastor (my Dad) would have to gently quiet down the extroverts (my Mom) who had moved all around the room & were still deep in conversation. It was a beautiful ritual of connection & when I began to think about the title for this blog, in light of the fact that PAX in Latin means peace, I realized that Passing the Peace would be the perfect fit.</image:caption>
